Lessons

Willowbrook members attend dressage, show-jumping and cross-country lessons. There are two mounted lessons per month. There is also one additional unmounted meeting per month for learning horse management and other topics important to pony club.

Mounted lessons are conducted in small groups according to rider ability and suitability of mount. Currently our jump lessons usually group into three groups: Below 2'6", 2'6" to 2'9", and 3' and above. Groups may change as our riders learn and gain experience or as we gain new members. The ability and experience of the horse also affects the grouping; an experienced rider on a green horse or out-of-shape horse will ride in a lower level group than they would on a fit and experienced mount.

Members provide their own pony or horse -- either by owning or leasing. The mount is expected to be suitable and safe for the level of rider. Pony club requires that mounts be at least 5yrs old, although much older ponies may be a better choice for younger riders. A rule of thumb is for the age of the horse and child to equal at least 21yrs old. Before joining Willowbrook, we like to see the child able to safely control the pony at a walk and trot both alone and in a small group.
